01 — About

Mathematics, rooted in culture

Dr. Harish Pandey is a teacher educator and mathematician whose work connects school mathematics with India's indigenous knowledge traditions. His doctoral research at the Faculty of Education, Banaras Hindu University, uncovered the mathematics embedded in the crafts of the Kumhar (potter) community of Varanasi — work that led to a patented, ethnomathematics-based mathematics learning device.

At Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha, he teaches B.Ed., M.Ed., Integrated B.Ed.–M.Ed., ITEP and Ph.D. students. As a resource person he trains faculty across India in Indian Knowledge Systems, Vedic Ganit, research methods, statistics and the use of AI in teacher education. From October 2026 he is also an Associate Fellow in the Pedagogy of Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla.
